Mark Wiseman (born 1970) is a Canadian business executive, investment manager, and diplomat-designate. On December 21, 2025, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Wiseman's appointment as the next Ambassador of Canada to the United States, succeeding Kirsten Hillman.

Early Life and Education

Born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Wiseman grew up in Burlington. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University and a joint Law and MBA degree from the University of Toronto. He later served as a law clerk for Madame Justice Beverley McLachlin at the Supreme Court of Canada.

Professional Career

Wiseman is recognized as one of Canada's most influential finance leaders.

  • CPPIB (2005–2016): He served as President and CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, overseeing the growth of one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds.
  • BlackRock (2016–2019): He was a Senior Managing Director and Global Head of Active Equities at the world’s largest asset manager.
  • AIMCo (2020–2023): He served as the Chair of the Alberta Investment Management Corporation.

Diplomatic Appointment (2025)

Prime Minister Mark Carney tapped Wiseman for the Washington post specifically for his "dealmaking" prowess ahead of the 2026 CUSMA review.

  • The "Brass Tacks" Strategy: Unlike previous career diplomats, Wiseman is expected to leverage his private-sector experience to negotiate directly with the Trump administration on tariffs affecting steel, aluminum, and autos.
  • Controversies: His appointment has faced criticism in Quebec due to his past musings on abolishing supply management and his support for the Century Initiative, which aims to grow Canada's population to 100 million.
